I am 25 and I have no college education. What should I do?

By Sammy · July 25, 2010 · Filed in Trading Education

I have a year and a half old son. I don’t have him three days out of the week, so I could go to night school on those days. Otherwise, I work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday in the daytime.

What should I do? My parents are middle class and have offered to pay for a trade school of some sort. I would like to make decent money.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I’ve done the night school thing and it was rough. I worked full-time, went to a local university 3 nights a week. Some nights, I wouldn’t get home til 10. Don’t even ask about house cleaning and what my dinners were like. Then, my work demanded more of my time, and I had to quit school or I would lose my mind. That was when I was in my mid-20s. It took about 4 years and I completed almost 2 years’ worth of school. Now, I’m 37, married and have a 5yr old son. I’m working but I’ve reached to where I can’t advance anymore without a bachelor’s degree. I’m with a great company and I found out about this school through our company’s HR site. It’s called Western Governor’s University. When I read up on them I couldn’t believe all the stuff and I started classes a month ago and am incredibly pleased. The school is fully accredited, it’s all online, and they have a wonderful reputation- but there’s 2 things that are AMAZING- one- the price is less than 6k a year (my company reimburses me for it too) and two- the entire completion of the degree is based on competency. There’s no driving to class, no sitting through everything, no pre-established number of hours etc. For the different competency units, there are assessments that must be completed to obtain credit. You work at your own speed and knowledge you have from prior studies or knowledge you obtained from your work or life in general really helps you go through the units faster. So, you have the ability to progress fast. Many students complete their degree in 2-3 years and I got transfer credits for almost all of my previous courses. I’m so glad I found them because I have a way to get my degree as fast as possible. And I’m spending the least amount of time away from my family- I’m just one room away!

Learn a trade, computers, if you type, you can always feed yourself, get some computer skills under your belt, and you could make good money as a legal secretary or computer help desk (with training of course) could get some medical training . .I think you have quite a few options.

It’s never too late to start.

Go to a trade school or community college. You’ll find many people your age (or older) at community college taking classes on nights and weekends because they don’t have time due to jobs.

umm go back to school

You are old enough to get financial aid on your own. If you want to further your education do it. You can get financial aid for part time studies, you just have to keep a certain GPA. I went back to school at 28 and graduated at 30 with an associates in business. Next year i will finish up with my BA.

get a loan or do extra little things like selling stuff that you dont need on ebay or amazon

you can also be extras on commericals. they get paid like $100 for just standing in a crowd

go to college

You are going to find that the longer you wait, the harder it will be. Think about what you like to do or want to do. Then, tailor your needs around that. My husband is 38 and having to go to a University right now full time and it is hard. However, he knows that the reward will be greater. Trade schools are fine and you can make as much money with a trade as a degree. You could also explore the option of on-line classes. So, even when he is asleep, you can pop on a do some work.

Another option, depending of you are married or not is the military. A girlfriend of mine joined the NAVY and was never deployed to a major zone 9she never left the US). However, she was married and her husband could help with the child and she lived by her parents. But the benefits she gets are unbelievable. They have paid for her bachelors and she is almost done with her Masters. Something to think about…. She did radiology.
